Danny Wilde will always be best
known as one half of The Rembrandts, the duo most famous for the hit
songs "Just The Way It Is, Baby" and "I'll Be There For You [the theme
from Friends]," but Wilde had been pretty active in the music biz long
before he was cranking out Top 40 hits. He's worked with some of the
most popular artists from the last 30 years---from old school rockers
like Peter
Frampton and Robert
Palmer to modern day hitmakers like Martina
McBride and Plain White T's.
In the late 1970s, Danny was the
lead singer of The Quick , an LA based indie punk/pop band that has a
cult following to this day. They released one album, 'Mondo Deco', for
Mercury Records, but eventually split up. Danny then moved on to the
band Great Buildings. Although they only released one album, 'Apart
From The Crowd', on Columbia,
the band marked the beginning of his musical collaborations with future
co-Rembrandt Phil Solem.
By the 1980s Wilde had found moderate success as a solo artist. He released three solo albums, one on Island Records and two on Geffen, and landed a couple of rock radio hits with Isn't It Enough and Time Runs Wild. But in 1989, when Danny's third solo album failed to live up to Geffen's expectations, he was dropped from the label. In 1990, Danny Wilde teamed up with longtime pal Phil Solem to write and record a few demos. The duo formed The Rembrandts and had an instant smash hit with "Just The Way It Is, Baby." The Rembrandts would go on to release three albums in the 1990s and have a string of minor Top 40 hits (Johnny Have You Seen Her, Someone, Burning Timber, This House Is Not A Home.) The duo's song Rollin' Down The Hill was featured in the hit movie Dumb & Dumber. In 1995, Danny and Phil agreed to record the theme song to a forthcoming NBC pilot. When the show became a hit, the theme song became one of radio's most requested songs before a full length version had even been recorded. Despite the duo's request that the song be left off their album, 'LP', Elektra Records insisted that it be included. "I'll Be There For You" soared up the charts and suddenly The Rembrandts went from an underground, mature powerpop band to bubblegum, Monkee-esque popsters. After the multi platinum success of the Friends theme, Wilde and Solem went their separate ways. In 1998, Danny released the solo album Spin This, and in 2000 teamed up with guitarist Jesse Cook to cover the Crowded House favorite Fall At Your Feet. The song was a top 20 Adult Contemporary hit in the US and top 10 in Canada. But old habits die hard, and by late 2000, Danny Wilde was once again working with Phil Solem as The Rembrandts. In 2001, The Rembrandts released the critically acclaimed Lost Together. Since 2005, two separate Rembrandts best of packages have been released---Fuel Records "Choice Picks" and Rhino's "The Rembrandts Greatest Hits." Danny Wilde has also been working with other artists---in 2006 he mixed and co-wrote several tracks from the Gin Blossoms album Major Lodge Victory. He also co-wrote a track with Plain White T's for their album "All That We Needed." While The Rembrandts continue to tour and make new music, Wilde finds time for other projects. He has recently written/recorded with up and coming artists like Cliff Hillis and Katie & Katie. Be sure to check out Danny's solo album N-Progress at http://amiestreet.com/artist/9951 |
